We're so grateful for the work he does, and proud of him for earning this honor!
Here's the press release from COSA, the Coalition of School Administrators:
"Tyler Woodral, assistant principal of Cascade High School in the Cascade School District, has been named Oregon High School Assistant Principal of the Year. He received the news in a surprise announcement at a regional meeting at the Willamette Education Service District on Tuesday morning. The award is presented by the newly named Oregon Principals Association (OPA), part of the Coalition of Oregon School Administrators (COSA). OPA brings Oregon’s elementary and secondary principals together in one association, mirroring the National Principals Association (NPA), which now serves principals at every grade level.
Woodral joined Cascade High School as an English teacher in 2003 and has served as assistant principal for the past 13 years. He starts each day in the lunchroom helping serve breakfast, learning students’ names before the first bell. He also organizes and chaperones rooter buses to away and playoff games so that cost and logistics never keep students from going.
“Tyler is the heart and soul of Cascade High School’s culture,” Cascade High School Principal Pete Rasmussen said in the nomination letter.
Woodral also changed how Cascade handles attendance. He created a senior seat-time policy with six-week progress checks and a hardship appeals process for families in crisis. Since then, senior attendance warnings have dropped by more than half, senior attendance has reached 94%, and Cascade’s graduation rate has climbed to a record 95.5%.
“Tyler’s relentless, detail-oriented focus on individual student progress is a driving force behind our record 95.5% graduation rate,” Cascade School District Superintendent Darin Drill said in the nomination letter.
He also works to build connections across the school community. He mails Positive Postcards home to recognize students’ character and effort. He uses senior exit interviews to find and publicly thank the staff members who made a difference. And he expanded Achievement Trips and college visits to reward strong attendance.
Woodral will be formally honored at the COSA Law Conference in December 2026."
